In a union of two great Swedish artists, writer-director Ingmar Bergman pairs with Ingrid Bergman in an Oscar-nominated performance — her last on film. Ingrid plays Charlotte, a mother and world-famous pianist who forsakes a music career to reconcile with her oldest daughter, Eva (Liv Ullmann), in a night of painful revelation. But tensions arise when she discovers her other daughter, who is mentally impaired, is staying with Eva.
